New Directions in Indigenous Music and Culture

This session will explore the issues faced by Indigenous artists living in remote communities. How can we improve communication and connections to increase economic opportunities for musicians residing in the Top End? Allen Murphy will offer a snapshot of Australia’s varied and vast musical landscape, while shining a light on the gulf that exists between opportunities afforded to artists in the city as opposed to artists of an equally high calibre living in Australia’s Indigenous remote communities.

Book Launch World Music: Global Sounds in Australia

An exciting event this year is the publication of a new book World Music: Global Sounds in Australia (UNSW Press), which chronicles the evolution of the genre in Oz over the last 30 years. Edited by music journalist Seth Jordan, the book contains informed specialist chapters from many knowledgable contributors, including Bruce Elder, Kate Welsman, Paul Petran, Therese Virtue, Brent Clough, Cristina Dio, Simon Raynor and others. World Music from the heart of Australia, Central Desert Country!

Music from the Streets - A History of the Reggae Sound System

Join Jamaica’s legendary sound system man, Rory from Stone Love; and local sound system heavies Derek M, Jesse I and Milton Westcarr for an exclusive one-off reggae workshop. Exploring sound system culture from its roots in the ghettos of downtown Kingston, circa 1950; to the rise of the UK sound on the streets of Brixton; and the emergence of custom-built sound systems in Australia’s urban hubs.
